I recently gave a talk called “Drop the Performance – Can you be Real?” for an audience of professional & emerging professional speakers.
The level of engagement sparked by the talk indicated to me that this topic resonated with many people. As much as I was delighted at the energy created around this topic, I was not very surprised that it did. Because as I’ve often observed, there are some crucial elements missing from the many talks & presentations that I’ve witnessed over the past 15+ years of studying public speaking.
Assuming the speaker is reasonably knowledgable on their topic, the following components are some of the commonly missing ingredients in presentations that cause the figurative glass wall to stand between the speaker & the audience :-
Lack of Heart = Lack of emotional connection.
Lack of Confidence = Speaker is overly self-conscious.
Lack of Humility = Speaker’s ego is getting in the way.
Lack of Realness = Too much of a performance versus a conversation.
Lack of Presence = Speaker is in their head versus being WITH the audience.
Lack of Clarity = Speaker uses too many words & the talk is all over the place.
Lack of Fun = Speaker takes themselves WAY too seriously!
Lack of Impact = All of the above.
Can you relate to any of these limitations?
Public speaking is the MEDIUM through which to influence people.
If you want your talk to be effective and ACTUALLY influence the audience, it is your responsibility to develop yourself so that you no longer have these limitations.
Are you ready to get out of your own way & communicate with impact?
